When to Call a Roofing Contractor

Was that storm bad enough to damage your roof? Storm damage doesn’t always come in the form of quarter-sized hail or a tree falling on your home or business. Often, it can be much more subtle. If you’re unsure, call a roofing contractor. Most reputable roofers — including Centaur — offer no-obligation inspections in the aftermath of severe weather. Even if you can’t see obvious damage, here are some signs that can indicate damage.

  • Storms damage roofs, that’s a fact. More than likely, your home is not the only one affected by an individual storm. Insurance companies know this but will not inspect your roof without you putting in a claim.

    However, putting in a claim is a big deal and is not a decision that should be taken lightly. The best way to know how to proceed is with an inspection by a roofing professional. Our “Assurance Program” allows you to have an inspection done right away and we will provide you with a detailed roof report. This roof report will give you an in-depth look at the condition of your roof post-storm, which allows you to make an informed decision on how you want to proceed.

    By careful of any door-to-door roofer telling you to put in a claim. This is a decision you should be making without any pressure from a roofer. At the end of the day, your insurance company will send their own inspector and they will provide a more definitive assessment. However, don’t assume that the inspector will have your best interests in mind, they work for the insurance company. Be sure you have a roofing professional you trust to meet with the insurance company inspector at the time of inspection.

  • Yes, you are given allotted time per your insurance policy to put in a claim and get your home repaired. DO NOT IGNORE LEAKS! This can cause continual damage that would not be covered by your insurance company. Also as a homeowner, you are required to protect your home if the roof is damaged.   • What you can see on your roof does not show the extent of the damage – seals are broken by wind, and hail damage is impossible to see without getting on the roof. Once seals are broken around the shingle, it will not seal back properly. Then water can find its way under your roof and cause damage. Hail impacts loosen granules which protect the shingle from the sun. This will cause your roof to break down prematurely and shorten its life. With our roof reports, we will take detailed pictures so that you can see for yourself the damage.

  • Actual coverage varies from policy to policy, but most insurance companies offer whole roof coverage if 25% of the roof is damaged by a storm-driven peril. It does not matter how old your roof is, roofs are usually covered for the full replacement cost. However, it is always a good idea to review your insurance policy, especially if a large storm is coming like a hurricane.

  • This is probably the most frequently asked question. If you feel that is damage to your home due to a storm you should absolutely put a claim in. The premiums you pay are for scenarios exactly like the circumstances brought on by severe weather. Most likely the rate will go up regardless of whether or not you personally file a claim. Rates are typically created by zip code, so if a storm, tornado, hail or wind blow through your neighborhood, then it is considered an “Act of God” and they raise rates in your area as a whole.
